Meet the only person buried on the moon

Eugene Merle Shoemaker entered the world on April 28, 1928, in Los Angeles, USA.

His early interest in geology and astronomy fueled his pursuit of degrees in both disciplines.

In 1960, Shoemaker completed his Ph.D. in geology at Princeton University, concentrating on the examination of impact craters.

In 1948, he became part of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and subsequently co-established the Branch of Astrogeology, dedicated to the exploration of planetary geology.
Shoemaker played a pivotal role in training Apollo astronauts in field geology to ready them for lunar exploration missions.
Unfortunately, Shoemaker met his demise in a car accident on July 18, 1997, during field work in Australia. He was 69 years old at the time of his passing.

Furthermore, he holds the unique distinction of being the only individual whose ashes have been scattered on the Moon.
